Borehole Solutions

Borehole Solutions

Boreholes have been a source of water for centuries, and although the upfront costs can be quite high, the long-term benefits are absolutely worth it – if it’s done right, by the right people, that is.

Benefits of a borehole
  • Increases the value of your property.
  • Decreases your demand on municipal water supply.
  • Enjoy a beautiful green garden year-round without worrying about a big municipal bill.
  • Borehole water is often of a higher quality than mains water.
  • Residential borehole water is free – pay only for the electricity while your pump is running.
  • Borehole water can be used for many of your water needs.
  • The chances of a fault or interruption are dramatically reduced as the entire system is only meant to serve a single property.
  • Similar to other ‘off-grid’ systems such as solar power, a borehole lessens the demand on municipal infrastructure.
Avoid the cost of getting it wrong.

Borehole Drilling

Borehole drilling is not only applicable to commercial, industrial and municipal projects, but can be tailored to suit smaller residential and domestic projects too.

At UPP we are able to offer unique, customised solutions, perfectly suited to any budget, terrain or project.

When designing your system, a few things will be taken into consideration:

  • Usage (i.e. off-grid / irrigation purposes)
  • Placement of the system
  • How much water flow and pressure are required
  • Site layout and geological factors such as terrain and formation type

For smaller, more precise projects, a more compact and manoeuvrable drill will be utilised – however this can be altered depending on the size of the project, your timeframe and terrain.

Throughout the borehole drilling process, we will keep you updated on drilling depth, possible unforeseen costs, changes to timeframes and geological findings – each of which may affect the project.

What is a Yield (or Pump) Test?

A Yield Test is a test to see the balance between the maximum amount of water that can be pumped out of the borehole and the amount of water that recharges back from the surrounding ground water source.

Another way to put it, is to say that it’s the process where a borehole is subjected to pumping under controlled test conditions in order to determine its performance – i.e. the yield is the volume of water that can be abstracted from a borehole.

There are two important rules that need to be kept in mind when determining the sustainable yield:

  • The total abstraction from the borehole should be less than the natural groundwater recharge.
  • A borehole should be pumped in such a manner that the water level never reaches the position of the main water strike (the level at which water is first encountered), as the yield will inevitably be affected and the borehole will eventually dry up.

Conducting a Yield Test is important to establish borehole potential, to estimate the sustainable yield and overall performance, as well as to determine the correct size pump required.

Pump, Tank and Filtration Installations

Once the drilling process has been completed, we can start planning for the installation of the pump.

Pump size is affected by many factors, but mainly:

  • Your water demands
  • The depth of the borehole
  • The borehole water yield

During the design and installation process, a qualified electrician and plumbing technician will be on-site, ensuring your system complies with safety regulations.

A water quality report may state that a filtration system needs to be added. Our highly experienced technicians will ensure that the correct filtration system is installed and that it is installed in the correct place depending on the results of the water quality test.

Got a question?

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO USE BOREHOLE WATER?

The best way is to use it sparingly, allowing the resource to serve you for as long as possible. It is always advisable to have borehole water tested by a reputable laboratory prior to consumption or for use in food preparation and cooking.

DO I NEED APPROVAL TO INSTALL A BOREHOLE?

In most areas you don’t require permission to install a borehole. However, you may contact us for clarification on 011 792 6222.

HOW MUCH SPACE IS REQUIRED FOR THE RIG?

We have a variety of rigs suitable for most applications. We would, however, need to have a look at the site to make sure our equipment has the required access.

HOW MUCH WATER CAN I EXPECT FROM A BOREHOLE?

Most boreholes that we drill can supply more water than the customer requires. Contact us for more information on what you can expect from your location.

IS BOREHOLE WATER SAFE TO DRINK?

All spring and most bottled water is derived from the ground, while both spring and bottled water sources pump water from boreholes. If you are going to drink from this water source, we always advise to have it analysed at a water lab to make absolutely sure that it is fit for consumption.

DO I NEED TO PAY TO REGISTER A BOREHOLE AND WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE INVOLVED?

Borehole water that is used for commercial or agricultural purposes needs to be registered. In Gauteng, registration is not required if the water is to be used is for domestic purposes. In the Western Cape, once you have drilled a borehole and water is found and utilized, the borehole needs to be registered with the municipality. It is always good practice to check with your local authority.

IS GROUNDWATER AS CLEAN AND PURE (DRINKABLE) AS SURFACE WATER?

In most parts of the RSA, groundwater is of a potable quality. The areas where the natural groundwater quality is poor, is well mapped. The areas where the groundwater quality has been compromised by anthropogenic activities are also known to the DWA. It would be beneficial if you have drilled a borehole and intend to use it as a domestic source of water, that you have it tested chemically by a reputable laboratory.

HOW LONG WILL A BOREHOLE LAST?

A 20-year lifespan for the major components can be expected. The water in the aquifer might fluctuate with the seasons (groundwater relies on rainfall) but properly managed, the resource should be there indefinitely.

IS IT NECESSARY TO INVESTIGATE AN AREA BEFORE A BOREHOLE IS DRILLED?

Yes, given the complex geological and consequent geohydrological conditions in South Africa, it is of the utmost importance to use the services of a professional geohydrologist.

CAN I DECIDE WHERE TO POSITION MY BOREHOLE?

Yes! you can, however we will provide a complete assessment and recommend the position that we feel has the most potential of striking water.

HOW DEEP IS A BOREHOLE?

Ground formation varies from area to area, which makes it difficult to give an accurate answer, however most boreholes are between 30m to 60m deep. There are many boreholes that we drill that are 80m or 100m deep, and a few even deeper.

WILL MY BOREHOLE ALWAYS YIELD THE SAME VOLUME OF WATER?

Borehole yield is not always constant. Weather systems such as drought can impact the yield of a borehole.

CAN I USE AS MUCH BOREHOLE WATER AS I WANT?

Borehole owners are urged to be responsible water users, as groundwater sources are not infinite. South Africa is, in fact, a water-scarce country, so every drop needs to be conserved. Ultimately, boreholes add to the pressure on groundwater resources, leading to less water being available for each user. People need reminding that, while a borehole and its infrastructure may be the property of the owner, the water remains the property of the state. This places the onus on the user to manage the resource responsibility and not to the detriment of others.
